Why did Lucifer appear to have descended instead of ascended in the movie, "Constantine"?

When John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) slit his wrists and said, "Hurry up." he looked up and then "Lou" appeared touching DOWN instead of appearing up from the floor. Why did they portray him like that?
